Frequently asked questions and answers
What is physical medicine
Physical medicine (also known as physical and rehabilitative medicine or PRM) is one of the oldest medical specialisms that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of functional disorders and pain - without surgical intervention and with the minimum possible use of medication. It uses physical stimuli such as heat, cold, electricity, movement, water or mechanical forces to help the body heal and stimulate adaptation mechanisms. Only therapy methods for which there is scientific evidence are used, i.e. the effectiveness of the therapies or therapy combinations has been investigated and established according to scientific rules.
Aims and tasks of physical medicine
- Pain relief (e.g. for back pain, arthrosis, tension)
- Restoration of mobility, e.g. after injuries or operations, but also
also for chronic or degenerative diseases - Improvement of joint, muscle and sensory function
- Improving quality of life (e.g. in the case of neurological diseases or in old age)
- Prevention of loss of function and secondary diseases
Typical treatment methods
- Physiotherapy (physiotherapy, manual therapy,...)
- Electrotherapy (e.g. TENS, frequency-modulated forms of current, swelling or stimulation currents, etc.)
- Ultrasound therapy in various intensities through to shock wave therapy
- Thermotherapy (heat or cold therapy)
- Massages
- Light therapy, laser therapy
- Medical training therapy
Who is physical medicine suitable for?
- Patients with musculoskeletal disorders (e.g. slipped disc, rheumatism)
- People after accidents or operations (e.g. knee surgery, stroke)
- People with neurological diseases (e.g. multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease)
- Athletes to improve performance and prevent injuries
- Older people to maintain mobility
What should I bring to the appointment?
Please take your e-card, referral and relevant findings with you to the medical examination.
Findings are important to us if they relate to the area or part of the body where your symptoms are located. X-ray images, MRI, ultrasound and CT findings are particularly important for us to be able to plan appropriate treatment for you. In the case of injuries, please be sure to bring a letter from the outpatient clinic; if you have recently had an operation, please be sure to bring the operation report and the discharge letter from the hospital. A physical examination is usually necessary, please make sure you wear appropriate clothing.
If you suffer from a chronic illness, e.g. of the lungs or heart, please take the last letter from your doctor with you. Laboratory results from the last 3 months only
For the physical therapies, please take a large towel with you and make sure you have appropriate clothing that you can easily remove in the therapy area.
For exercise therapy, you will also need a large towel and light sports clothing, including shoes. If you wear insoles or an orthosis is prescribed for a joint, you must take these with you
The same applies to medical strength training and the agravity treadmill
